DEPARTMENT OF STATE The State Department is the oldest and the most senior of the Cabinet Departments. It performs the same functions as the "Foreign Ministries" of many other countries. The Secretary of State heads this department and sits on the Cabinet of the President of the United States, advising him about the relationships between the United States and the other countries of the world. This department operates all of the Embassies and Consulates of the United States throughout the world. The Secretary of State is a Presidential Appointment, as are a number of other Under Secretaries, Assistant Secretaries and their Assistants. The are assigned to other tasks and sub-departments. These are all important appointments of the President. The Secretary of State also recommends nominees to the President to be Ambassadors to other countries and to various important international organizations such as the United Nations. These are also subject to confirmation by the United States Senate.
